Programs
To achieve these goals, justwondoor has established three programs: Global Health Scholars Program, Global Women’s Health Fellowship, and International Programs. Read below for more information.
Global Health Scholars Program
Located in Cleveland, Ohio, is an independent, voluntary, thirty-month curriculum and certificate program, designed to run concurrently and complement the University Hospitals/ Case Western Reserve Medical School residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine. Its goal is to educate OB/GYN residents in the general principles of prevention, diagnosis and management of common diseases in developing countries and how to apply these same principles to underserved populations in the United States with the goal of becoming better global health providers. The curriculum presented is consistent with educational objectives outlined by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Consortium of Universities for Global Health Competencies Toolkit. With fulfillment of the requirements of the program, participating OB/GYN residents will be awarded a Certificate of Global Health.
Residents learn through a variety of modalities including didactic sessions, book club, journal club, global health film series; attendance at one International/Global Health continuing medical education conference during any year of the residency; travel and work during a four-week elective in the 3rd or 4th year of residency in a low resource setting within a sustainable program, focusing on Women’s Health; and Scholar presentation of a Global Health Grand Rounds at University Hospitals of Cleveland Dept. of OB/GYN focusing on International Health Care.
Global Women’s Health Fellowship
JUSTWONDOOR facilitates the application, selection and placement of a Global Health Fellow in a 24-month training program in which fellows work as an attending OB/GYN, currently at Georgetown Public Hospital in Georgetown, Guyana. Our faculty provides curriculum, educational and administrative support to the fellow in collaboration with the Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, with the goal of preparing OB/GYN residency graduates for long-term service in low-resource countries and communities with large impoverished populations, gaining exposure to, an understanding the diversity of gynecological and obstetrical patient management in this setting, along with new clinical and teaching skills.
International Programs
The goal of the International Program is to provide sustainable post-graduate medical school education in an OB/GYN residency in a low-resource setting. JUSTWONDOOR supports the application and selection process of candidates for the Guyana residency, provides curriculum, educational and administrative support, provides faculty for the resident orientation session and ongoing visiting faculty for in-country didactic and clinical teaching, provides academic support for annual CREOG exams, as well as faculty examiners for the residents’ final oral exam required for graduation. JUSTWONDOOR also arranges and supervises a one-month observation for third year Guyanese OB/GYN residents at University Hospitals/ Case Western Reserve University.
When after completion of their training, these new providers will be able to take ownership of the program, continue to train new providers and reduce the problem of brain drain. This model of sustainable postgraduate education for OB/GYN providers on low resource settings can be able to be applied to other countries.
Future Activities
justwondoor would like to expand its Global Health Scholars program by increasing the number of active faculty, expanding the curriculum and increasing engagement with medical students, other specialty residents, fellows, faculty, nurses and the general public.
Additionally, justwondoor would like to expand its International Program model of sustainable post-graduate education for OB/GYN providers in low resource settings to other countries.
